Modern Craftsman

A simple single-story mid-century home was transformed into a beautiful multi-story, multi-building craftsman-inspired family demesne over several design and construction phases.  With a creative structural solution, the Owners were able to have the second-floor master suite they desired.  Because they were so pleased with the first phase of the project the Owners returned to Phillips|Sekanick Architects, inc. for the design of an in-law suite.  Warm wood trim, stacked stone accents, a rich color palette and a subtle ceiling arch are design elements found throughout the grounds.

Challenge

The Owners of a modest 1-story mid-century modern house wanted to expand upward for a new master suite.  Instead of removing the existing flat roof, they wanted the new master suite to be supported by a structural system located completely above the existing roof.  The two independent structures would need to be linked together in a logical fashion and architectural styles thoughtfully blended.  Several years after the initial expansion was completed, the Owners returned asking for an in-law suite with similar architectural features.  They also wanted an outdoor patio space that related to the design theme but made its own statement.

Solution

By surrounding the existing house with a new structural colonnade an independent second level was able to be added above the existing residence.  A two-story foyer with an open tread stair was added to link the two levels.  A craftsman style with modern flair was applied to the newly unified elements.  This design style was carried into the in-law suite.  To further unify the design the gentle arch of the main residence foyer entry was repeated in the ceiling of the in-law suite and in the patio pergola.  A bold red color was used at the pergola to highlight this playful element in the outdoor landscape.

Private Tennis Cottage

As part of an ongoing relationship with our client, our firm was asked to design a new tennis “cottage” to compliment the newly built tennis courts on the edge of their residential development.  Using materials, colors and textures that are consistent with those of their adjacent residence, the new building was designed to not only provide a space to gather and relax before and after matches, but also as a place to enjoy match play, enjoy summer afternoons, and evening outings with friends and family.  Providing a space for the enjoyment of outdoor spaces, the building also serves as a means to provide a transition in the changing topography of the site.

Challenge

The tennis cottage, by its very nature, required only a small footprint when compared to the adjacent residence.  The design therefor had to address both scale and the detail necessary to provide a structure that was consistent with the overall character of the family home.  With a more than ten foot change in elevation on the site, the tennis courts and the building needed to be sited in a way that provided the owner with interior space that was accessible to all, while also providing and exterior entertainment area that focused on the courts and other outdoor activities.

Solution

By designing a building that provided a two soaring two-story interior, the structure provided an appropriate relationship to the scale of the main residence.  Materials, colors and details were reproduced from the design of the main house, but scaled and simplified to reflect the less formal atmosphere of the tennis facility.  With the need for a variety of gathering spaces, the tennis viewing area, firepit and gathering spaces were sited around three sides of the building, providing an opportunity to create not only an upper level viewing area, but also several unique spaces for small group gatherings.

French Country Addition

The owners of a French Country styled home in the Warren area approached Phillips|Sekanick Architects with a desire to develop a new dining and kitchen area that would parallel their busy lifestyle and allow each member the opportunity to cook and prepare meals. By working closely with the client, our team was able to develop a plan that reconfigured the existing areas and extended the kitchen into a new open area, creating a more functional and better organized space. The flexible kitchen, with an abundance of natural light, serves as not only as a casual dining area, but also as a center of daily family life and activity.

French Country Addition

Challenge

The existing kitchen provided a very limited preparation area that was constrained due to the layout of the adjacent family room and casual dining space.  The area was also closed off and segregated from the rest of the house. It was clear an addition would be necessary, but window locations for the second-floor bedrooms restricted the size and placement of the extended kitchen.

Solution

By swapping the location of the kitchen and dining areas, Phillips|Sekanick Architects was able to maximize the work-surface in the kitchen while keeping the footprint of the addition to a minimum.  The kitchen now became a connector for various functions within the house while also being sized to allow multiple members of the family to participate in meal preparation. Because the addition footprint was kept to a minimum, the sight-lines from the second-floor bedrooms remained unchanged.

Residential Retreat

This private residence is the result of nearly a decade of planning, design, and construction. Developed from the renovation of an existing 2,800 square foot one and a half-story home, this residence sits on 6.25 acres within the City of Warren. The home consists of three distinct living areas that make up the main residence, along with a free-standing pool house and entertainment area. This complex blends a variety of materials, textures, forms, and architectural styles to create a unique and distinctive home.

Residential Retreat

Challenge

The homeowner converted a modest suburban home into its current grandeur over the course of three separate and distinct design and construction projects.  As an added challenge, the homeowners and their children occupied the house throughout most of the construction projects utilizing it as their primary residence.  Careful attention to detail was needed to transform the existing house into an eclectic residential complex designed to meet the unique needs and wishes of the owner.

Solution

When completed, very little of the original one and a half-story home remained.  As part of the process the homeowners acquired adjacent properties and had the existing homes demolished.  With close communication and careful attention to detail the homeowners’ vision was fully realized in this unique custom home.
